Barbell Pullover Muscles Used

The deltoid and pectoralis major muscles play a significant role in daily activities and sports skills, making them essential for overall fitness. In fact, a study published by Santana et al. found that the deltoid and pectoralis major muscles were the most active during barbell pullover exercises (Santana, Vera-Garcia, & McGill, 2007).

During a barbell pullover exercise, the triceps brachii and latissimus dorsi muscles are also activated, making them an effective addition to a workout routine. A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that the horizontal bench press was more effective at activating the pectoralis major muscle compared to the barbell pullover (Santana et al., 2007).

The same study also found that the anterior deltoid muscle was more active during the horizontal bench press, while the posterior deltoid muscle was less active. In contrast, the barbell pullover exercise activated both the anterior and posterior deltoid muscles to a greater extent.

In terms of electromyographic activity, the pectoralis major muscle showed higher activation during the horizontal bench press compared to the barbell pullover. The triceps brachii muscle also showed higher activation during the barbell pullover exercise.
